Human connection in universities: AI, Adjuncts, and the role of Professors
In an interview with The Chronicle of Higher Education, Tyler Cowen was asked how AI might affect human connection in universities.
We need to make sure that doesn’t happen. Right now, you have intro classes where one adjunct, not even a professor, lectures to 200 or 300 people. What’s the human connection in that? It’s really pretty weak. If professors do less information transmission and more mentoring, we can make the human connection much stronger. But we need to actually do that. Faculty have to embrace that. I don’t think most faculty want that. They’re used to teaching the way they’ve taught for years or decades. So that’s a tough fight. But the goal is to make the human connection more vivid, more emotional, more inspirational.
As someone who was a tenured professor, I agree with this.
