We are all shaped by it. In that sense, it’s universal. And yet—no two people experience the passing of time in the same way. For some, it stretches and lingers. For others, it collapses, accelerates, disappears. Time is everywhere and nowhere at once: shared, but radically singular. That contradiction fascinates me. From78 is my attempt to think about time as it is actually lived—felt in the body, remembered, anticipated, endured, enjoyed, and sometimes suffered. The From78 website is a space to reflect on how I experience time and to invite others to share how they experience it too. I told him it was in these really cool movies called Back to the Future.

He asked me what the movies were about, and why they were called Back to the Future . This audio is me trying to explain thfrist two films to him. It’s actually kind of hard to explain these movies to a five-year-old! (Well, it was hard for me.)

 When he goes back in time, the car kinda runs outta gas, and he has to find a way to get more gas to make the car go back to his present, which is the future in the past where he is, which is very confusing.

(This one is of buzz saws.)

Today, I was walking to the park with one of my kids, and I noticed this small thumping sound, which turned out to be acorns from the oak trees dropping to the ground. I liked the sound and recorded 1:00 min of it. There are is also the sound of lawn mower and birds in the background.

I plan to keep adding to this as I think about who and what have influenced me.

However, when I look at it now, I notice something I think is significant that helps me not be overly focused on making things perfect: Most of the stuff the people on this list make isn’t super polished/overly produced.

Of course, there are some things on this list that do have a rather high production value to them, such as Bella Freud’s videos, and Ezra Klein’s podcast, but these things constitute the minority rather than the majority of things on this list.

This is the second field note I’ve recorded and posted to the new From78 site (hosted via Micro.blog). I used a small wireless mic and my iPhone’s voice memo app to make the field note. If it sounds good, I plan to do more things like this.
